Bees vs Wasps
Above is a photo comparing bees and wasps. European, (German and Common) wasps look the same to most people; as the European wasp pictured, they normally nest in the ground or in walls. European wasp nests can grow to become a huge problem, many garden centres and hardware chains have products that will dispose of moderate size nests. Paper wasps can be left alone if they are not causing a direct problem or are commonly treated with fly spray if they are a real problem.
Bees can not be collected out of the air, but if they are all bunched up like grapes, then they can be collected and hived and looked after!! See photo above of a good size swarm clustered on a branch.
Bumble bees (above) are another source of swarm call, generally they die out at the end of each season while Queen bumbles hibernate. They do not replicate by swarming. They seem to quite like places such as natural compost heaps if left undisturbed, because they generate warmth and because they are normally only loosely packed.
